Great Britain does not include any part of Ireland. In the times of the Roman Empire the area called Provincia.

But the British Isles is a geographical term meaning Great Britain all of Ireland and all the smaller islands around them.

Why is it called the british isles. The group consists of two main islands Great Britain and Ireland and numerous smaller islands and island groups including the Hebrides the Shetland Islands the Orkney Islands the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Man. The British Isles have witnessed intermittent periods of competition and cooperation between the people that occupy the various parts of Great Britain the Isle of Man Ireland the Bailiwick of Guernsey the Bailiwick of Jersey and the smaller adjacent islands. The association of the term British with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as well as its association with the island of Great Britain cause the term to be regarded as objectionable or inappropriate to many people in Ireland when it is used to include Ireland.
